Gov Gordon August 2025 NRC Letter – Agreement State Amendment for SMURP

In an August 5, 2025 letter Governor Mark Gordon formally requested an amendment to the Agreement between the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the State of Wyoming.

Under the amended Agreement Gordon requests: “the NRC will discontinue certain regulatory authority for radioactive materials now under federal jurisdiction, and the State of Wyoming will assume that authority as detailed in Commission Paper SECY-23-0075“.

Gordon goes to state that “the State of Wyoming has a program for the control of source material recovered from any mineral resource for purposes other than its uranium and thorium content“.

Published the same day is this 707 page WY Dept. of Environmental Quality Agreement State Amendment Application, August 5, 2025, which is the new WY DEQ SMURP – Source Material and Uranium Recovery Program.

Both of the above documents were found at the NRC page, Wyoming Amended Agreement – Application Process.

All of the above is related to Wyoming being an NRC Agreement State.  Here is our page on that topic:  NRC – WY Agreement State
