BWX Technologies, Inc.
An engineering services company based out of Virginia specializing in nuclear technologies. Founded in 1867 as Babcock, Wilcox & Company.
Subsidiary BWXT Advanced Technologies LLC; Joe Miller, president of BWXT; Will Cayton, senior business manager at BWXT.
BWXT is a nuclear technologies company that has been a preferred contractor by the U.S. Navy for the development and deployment of nuclear reactors on submarines. In the last few years, the company has also emphasized a focus on building portable micro-reactors for use within the United States. Founded ten years ago.

BWX Technologies’ BANR (BWXT Advanced Nuclear Reactor) is a 50 MW thermal, high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor designed for flexible, modular energy generation. Utilizing TRISO fuel particles, renowned for their robustness and safety, the reactor offers inherent safety features, including passive cooling systems that do not rely on external power sources. Its modular, factory-fabricated design allows for transportation via standard rail, truck, or ship, facilitating rapid deployment to remote or off-grid locations. BANR is capable of providing electricity, industrial process heat, or both through cogeneration, making it suitable for applications ranging from mining operations to data centers. BANR is undergoing development and testing in partnership with the State of Wyoming, including TRISO fuel evaluations at Idaho National Laboratory, with the goal of demonstrating commercial viability. | Jul 18, 2025 WEA has announced a signed cooperation agreement with BWXT Advanced Technologies, a subsidiary of BWX Technologies, to evaluate the requirements for siting a TRISO nuclear fuel fabrication facility in Wyoming… “BWXT owns and operates the only two Nuclear Regulatory Commission Category 1-licensed commercial nuclear facilities in the United States, and we also manufacture fuel for the highly successful Canadian nuclear power market,” said Joe Miller, president of BWXT Advanced Technologies LLC. “For approximately 40 years, BWXT has furnished nuclear fuel across numerous government and commercial markets, giving the company a unique and highly credible background from which to draw as we review options for a potential new facility.”… (https://wyoenergy.org/bwxt-to-evaluate-locations-for-building-new-nuclear-triso-fuel-production-facility-to-support-advanced-reactor-deployment/) |
| 2025, March 26 BWXT recently signed a letter of intent with Tata Chemicals Soda Ash Partners LLC to explore deploying up to eight BANRs at a mining site in Wyoming… (https://www.bwxt.com/bwxt-launches-innovation-campus-to-speed-development-of-advanced-nuclear-technologies/) |
| 2024, June 17 The Wyoming Energy Authority today announced the award of the second phase of a contract with BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) to assess the viability of deploying small-scale nuclear reactors in the state as a source of resilient and reliable energy to augment existing power generation resources…Phase two of the contract includes completing conceptual design of a lead microreactor unit, developing a regulatory engagement plan and microreactor fleet model, and demonstrating the Wyoming supply chain’s ability to manufacture nuclear components…In support of this program, BWXT is leveraging existing U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP) achievements through the company’s collaboration with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and other internal BWXT research and development investments. Through the ARDP, BWXT and DOE have been developing the BANR microreactor since 2021, and this effort in Wyoming represents an acceleration of BWXT’s commercial nuclear development efforts. INL has been providing strategic and technical support to the State of Wyoming under a memorandum of understanding signed in 2022…The total value of the cost-share program is approximately $20 million, and phase two of the program is expected to be complete by the third quarter of 2025.
